Looking at the brighter side

During these cynical days in India with scams, corruption and so on, I felt its good to look at the bright side of our country.
  • Comparing India to all the big economies and big countries, ours is truly heterogeneous society. We have 1000’s of languages spoken and we are fairly tolerant to each other. All the other biggest developing countries (BRIC- Brazil, Russia, India and China) either have one language (Brazil and Russia) or maximum 2 languages (China). So we should be proud that we are fairly getting along well.
  • We as an >independent republic< are a very young country and democratically strong. There are people who might not know any history of India and history of democratic rule and its consequences AND history of authoritarian rule and its consequences and there are many who might not understand the strength of democracy since we never studied it properly in our schools nor soceity gives any importance to history. Democracy can be understood when we read our history and many more world histories or if we have fought against authoritarian rules like Europe did. But the optimistic thing in India is there are many people who can speak strongly for democracy and know what they are speaking. I am watching NDTV every evening and it is good to see experts on such topics. Eternal vigilence is the price we pay for democracy. Education (not just schooling - I mean knowledge gathered by studying (not by hearting :-)) is very important in a democratic soceity. Without education and awareness the democracy can be misused. This is the prize we pay for democracy.  World historians say democracy is the best a human kind can live in-- independently and freely and they also agree democracy is not perfect solutuion either, but its the best of all :-).
  • There are people who are not tolerant but also are such people who are tolerant. We are after all humans; we have good and bad sides in us.
  • Even though our education system seems to be saturated and diluted and poorly executed, when I hear fresh graduates speak and write English (I cannot say anything about their proficiency of their mother tongue) I feel its getting worse. But there are graduates who speak very good language. This makes me feel optimistic.

    Dear Bhavana, for the last several years we are always looking bright side :) our politicians try to destroy our nation as much as possible.
    Regarding language, for your information, there are many spoken languages in china also. Only we know that China speaks Cantonese and Mandarin. But thats not true, like our kannada, marathi, telugu, and Tamil, china is also having several languages. And its also true for Russia :)
    But as you said we should always be optimistic, since ;;MERA BHARAT MAHAN;;

    I agree politicians are problem, but this holds good for any other country.
    I do not agree that politicians are the only problem. Corruption is considered part of life by citizens as well.
    China might speak many other languages, but they certainly do not take them as official languages as we Indians do. Same goes to Russia.

Birthday cravings

“What do you want for your birthday?” he asked “A smartphone” I replied to him. Kiran rolled his eyes again as we had had this discussion for about four or five times during this year. Each time we had had this discussion, Kiran had opened my eyes to the ‘fact’ that a smartphone was a waste of time and money. In fact several times during our debates, he had pronounced that smartphone was a waste not just for myself, but for both of us. This had brought tears to my eyes with thoughts of ‘togetherness’. Find Part 1 here My newly found uncle became quite close to us and we started to visit each other during festivals and functions and so on. My uncle speaks a lot and and my family was silent lot and used to just smile and nod to whatever he used to say. My aunt is a sweet lady and very soft spoken and also used to pull my uncle's leg sometimes which used to give me quite a laugh!
