A tribute to Puttanna Kanagal

I was 6 years old when our Kannada film director Puttanna Kanagal died and even today I fondly remember his movies and most kannadigas do so too.

He was one the best in the industry (I can say, one of the best in entire Indian film industry itself!!) who made movies on social evils and issues such as handicapped people's life, life of prostitute, life of a wife whose husband becomes impotent, life of a doctor who falls in love with his mental patient and cures her and after cured she falls in love with someone else and then he goes mad, about education in villages and politics in the education system, life of conservative village and women's life in conservative village and the pros and cons of inter-religious relationships in conservative villages, women's independence, theme of psychological problems, double standards applied to men and women, lonely life of an actress and so on.

Most of these films were based on Kannada novels and Puttanna himself wrote the screenplay for all of them and all of them were commercially successful despite tackling major social issues.

Who says one cannot make literature into films? Who says one can’t tackle social issues in films and make money?

Puttanna used to shoot in different parts of Karnataka and propagate its natural beauty. Tragedy is he made only 25 movies. I cannot even image what he would have done with today's technology!!

Here I would like to share 2 songs one from original Kannada (my mother tongue) movie and from Zehreela Insaan". The movie in Kannada is called "ನಾಗರ ಹಾವು" and the remade movie in Hindi is called "Zehreela Insaan".

Birthday cravings

“What do you want for your birthday?” he asked “A smartphone” I replied to him. Kiran rolled his eyes again as we had had this discussion for about four or five times during this year. Find Part 1 here My newly found uncle became quite close to us and we started to visit each other during festivals and functions and so on. My uncle speaks a lot and and my family was silent lot and used to just smile and nod to whatever he used to say.
